VFD's & Soft Starters

Variable frequency drives let a motor run at the speed the job actually needs instead of full speed all the time, and that is where most of the energy savings come from. Shop drives and soft starters from Fuji Electric, WEG, Teco-Westinghouse, KB Electronics, and Marathon, from 1/8HP to 1000HP, to pair with our three phase and DC electric motors.

Drive or Soft Starter?

A variable frequency drive controls speed the whole time the motor runs. A soft starter only eases the motor up to full speed at startup, then steps aside.

If you need adjustable speed, choose a drive. If you only want to reduce startup shock on belts, couplings, or a crusher duty motor, a soft starter usually costs less.

Single Phase Power In, Three Phase Motor Out

Many drives here accept single phase input and output three phase power, so a three phase motor can run in a shop that only has single phase service. Check the drive's derating notes for your horsepower first.

A phase converter is an alternative when you want to power an entire machine from single phase power source.

Size to Nameplate Amps

Horsepower alone isn't enough. Match the drive's current rating to the full load amps on the motor nameplate, then confirm the input voltage, which ranges from 115VAC through 690VAC across this catalog.

Pick the Right Enclosure

NEMA 1 suits clean, dry panels. For washdown or dusty spaces, filter for NEMA 4X. NEMA/UL Type 1 conversion kits are stocked as well.

DC Speed Controls and Accessories

KB Electronics SCR drives control DC motor speed, so they pair with our DC electric motors. We also carry braking resistors, keypads, fuses, and cooling fans.
